Uttrakhand is composed of two words, "uttar" meaning "north" and "aanchal" meaning "blessings." Earlier known as "Devbhumi" meaning "the land of god," Uttrakhand also nourishes a diverse and rich culture and monuments of historical importance. Uttrakhand is broadly divided into two zones Kumaon and Garhwal.

Uttrakhand extends from 28º 43' N to 31º 27' N longitude and 77º 34' East to 81º 02' E latitude. Uttrakhand is surrounding by Nepal in the East, China in the North, Himachal Pradesh in the west and U.P. in the South.

Famous Tourist Places in Uttrakhand

Kumaon
The Kumaon region consists of a large Himalayan tract, together with two submontane strips called the Terai and the Bhabhar. The submontane strips were up to 1850 an almost impenetrable forest, given up to wild animals; but after 1850 the numerous clearings attracted a large population from the hills, who cultivated the rich soil during the hot and cold seasons, returning to the hills in the rains.
Dehradun
Nestled in the mountain ranges of the Himalaya, Dehradun is one of the oldest cities of India and currently capital of new born state Uttrakhand. Also known as the "Abode of Drona", Dehradun has always been an important center of the Garhwal rules which was captured by the British.
Pauri
Pauri provides a panoramic view of the snow clad Himalayas peak of Bandar Poonch, Swarga Rohini, Jonli, Gangotri Group, Jogin Group Thalaiya - Sagar, Kedarnath, Kharcha Kund, Sumeru, Satopanth, Chaukhamba, Neelkanth, Ghauriparvat, Hathiparvat, Nanda Devi and Trisul.
Mussoorie
Mussoorie with its green hills and varied Flora and Fauna, is a fascinating hill resort. Commanding a wonderful view of extensive Himalaya snow ranges to the northeast, and glittering views of the Doon Valley, Roorki, Saharabpur and Haridwar to the south, the town presents a fairy land atmosphere to the tourists.
Chopta
You haven't ever heard about Chopta. A destination nestled in the rhododendron and oak forests of the lower Garhwal Himalayan, Chopta is an alpine meadow straight out of a Swiss calendar.
Khirsu
The snow - laden mountains of Khirsu tempt the tourist in winters, while the panoramic view of Central Himalayas attracts tourists in summers, when one can get a clear view of 300 named and unnamed peaks.
Srinagar
30 kms. from Pauri situated on the bank of Alaknanda river Srinagar was once the capital of the Garhwal Kings before the arrival of British. Even today it is the biggest township of the district and is the seat of the Garhwal University.
Rishikesh
Rishikesh also known as the 'Place of Sages' is a spiritual town situated 24 kms. upstream from Haridwahice of the Chandrabhaga and Ganga, It is believed that God by the name of 'Hrishikesh' had apeared as an answer to the hard penances by Rabhiya Rishi and henceforth the place derived its name.
Nainital
The Nainital tourinie pride of the Kumaon region in himalayas Uttrakhand. While there are many other places equally beautiful, Nainital is certainly the most popular tourist destination in Kumaon.
Gwaldam
About 3 kms. from Baijnath, the main highway goes to Bageshwar and a side road branches off to Gwaldam. This is dall route as besides the presence of birds, adding a winsome note, one passes through terraced field and thick pines set against a backdrop of the Himalayas, and one can watch the Trishul peaks coming even closer.
Almora
The ancient town of Almora, before it's establishment was under the possession of Katyuri king Baichaldeo. He donated major part of this land to a Gujrati Brahmin Sri Chand Tiwari. Later on when Chand kingdom was founded in Baramandal, the town of Almora was founded at this centrally located placeorealyan Chand.
Kausani
Kausani is ideal for thousaescape from the din and dust, hustle and bustle of big cities and wish to spend a quiet holiday in the lap of nature. Indeed, Kausani is a veritable heaven of beauty to which an excursion must be made on visiting Kumaon.
Ranikhet
Besides being a cantonment (the place was selected as a hill station for British troops and accordingly tniktonment was established in 1869), Ranikhet (Queen’s field) is a popular tourist resort from where one gets an awe - inspiring view of the majestic Himalaya.
Auli
Auli, 8 km from Joshimath is an ideal winter resort run by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN). A 3 km long slope ranging from a height of 2519 to 3049 m is a major attraction. The Auli resort run by GMVN has snow beaters which beat the snow to keep the slopes fit for skiing
Bhimtal
Bhimtal is located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand , in the northern region of India. It is located at an altitude of 1,371 m above sea level amongst the Kumaon hills. It is 23 km from Nainital.
Binsar
